The bustling beaches and serene landscapes of Sierra Leone will soon echo with the crackle of amateur radio signals, as F6KOP Radio Club prepares to launch their much-anticipated 9L5A DXpedition. From November 27 to December 8, 2024, a 15-member international team will bring their expertise and passion to the airwaves, reconnecting the global amateur radio community with this captivating West African nation.
The Road to Sierra Leone
The journey to this DXpedition has been anything but smooth. Initially planned for Kassa Island in Guinea, the team had to pivot to Sierra Leone following a scheduling overlap with another expedition. This unexpected twist led to the revival of Sierra Leone as a destination—previously visited by the F6KOP team in 2019.
This time, with more resources and a larger team, the 2024 expedition promises to surpass its predecessor. Despite potential competition from other operators, the 9L5A team remains committed to meeting demand and ensuring their presence makes a significant impact.
What to Expect on the Air
Operating from 160m to 6m, the 9L5A DXpedition will utilize a mix of modes including SSB, CW, FT8, FT4, and RTTY. The team’s base of operations will be fully equipped, featuring a 10.5 kVA generator, state-of-the-art antennas, and updated software. Their meticulous preparation underscores their dedication to delivering a seamless experience for operators worldwide.
A Stand Against Paid Confirmations
In an era where LoTW confirmations often come with a cost, the F6KOP team takes a bold stance. 9L5A logs will be uploaded to LoTW free of charge, with no waiting periods. Donations are welcome to support their efforts but remain entirely optional. This commitment to accessibility reinforces their ethos of fostering camaraderie and inclusivity in the amateur radio community.
Sierra Leone on the DX Map
Ranked 80th on the most-wanted list, Sierra Leone holds a special place in the hearts of DXers. Its combination of rare airwave activity and rich cultural backdrop makes it a sought-after contact for operators worldwide. For the 9L5A team, this expedition is not just about adding QSOs to the log but about showcasing the vibrant spirit of Sierra Leone to the global community.
Follow the Adventure
As the team gears up for this extraordinary expedition, you can follow their journey on the official 9L5A website. Updates, photos, and log details will be available to keep the amateur radio community connected to the action.
With meticulous planning, a passionate team, and a spirit of inclusivity, the 9L5A DXpedition promises to be a landmark event for operators and enthusiasts around the globe. Mark your calendars and prepare for a new adventure on the airwaves!
