Since its establishment in 1962, the Irving Amateur Radio Club (WA5CKF) has been a beacon for amateur radio operators in North Texas. Known as the "Friendly Bunch," the club fosters a welcoming atmosphere for radio enthusiasts of all levels, offering opportunities for education, connection, and exploration of the amateur radio hobby.
Monthly Meetings and Community Spirit
The club meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Senter Park East Recreation Center in Irving, Texas. Adjustments are made for November and December to accommodate holiday schedules. These meetings are more than just gatherings—they are a chance to share knowledge, swap stories, and strengthen the community spirit that defines the IARC.
Hamfest: A Tradition of Discovery
One of the highlights of the year is the Irving ARC Hamfest, held on the first Saturday of March. This indoor event draws nearly 400 hams from the region to explore treasures across 70 vendor tables. Held at the Betcha Bingo Hall in Irving, the Hamfest offers hourly door prize drawings and culminates in a grand prize giveaway. For those who love the thrill of discovery, this is an event not to be missed.
Field Days and Collaboration
The IARC actively participates in Winter Field Day and ARRL Field Day, either independently or in partnership with neighboring clubs. These events provide members with hands-on opportunities to hone their skills, engage in contests, and connect with other operators across the country.
Services and Activities
The IARC prides itself on its extensive offerings:
- License Classes: Entry-level to advanced licenses
- Mentorship Programs: Supporting newcomers in their amateur radio journey
- On-The-Air Bulletins: Keeping the community informed
- Repeaters: Ensuring robust communication across the region
For those interested in public service, the club also engages in emergency communications and supports local schools and youth groups.

The IARC thrives under the guidance of a dedicated team:
- President: Ken Hansen (N2VIP)
- Vice President: Bill Byrom (N5BB)
- Treasurer/Secretary: Thomas J. Schuessler (N5HYP)
