Hornsby & Districts Amateur Radio Club: Celebrating Radio History and Innovation

CHERRYBROOK, NSWHornsby & Districts Amateur Radio Club (HADARC), established as a cornerstone of the Hornsby and surrounding districts' amateur radio scene, is more than just a club—it’s a community committed to preserving radio history while embracing the future of communication. Located in Mt Colah, HADARC has become a focal point for local radio enthusiasts and celebrates milestones in the world of wireless communication.

A Club with a Rich Legacy of Events

In addition to regular meetings, HADARC prides itself on organizing special events that celebrate historical milestones in radio communication. The club activates special callsigns to commemorate key moments in amateur radio history:

  • VK2WAH: Used every 5 years to mark the reception of the first direct wireless message from the UK to Australia, which took place on 22nd September 1918. This call sign has also taken on a more personal meaning during the COVID lockdowns, being affectionately known as "VK2 We Are Home".

  • VK2IMD: Activated on April 24th each year to commemorate International Marconi Day, celebrating the birth of Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of the wireless telegraph.

These callsigns serve as both a tribute to the pioneering spirit of early radio and as a way to engage with the wider amateur radio community around the world.

Where and When to Meet: A Place for All Enthusiasts

HADARC is dedicated to ensuring all radio enthusiasts have a space to meet, discuss, and learn. The club holds its main meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Mt Colah Community Centre, located at 6x Pierre Close, Mt Colah, NSW.

For those seeking a more informal gathering, mid-monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the same venue. These informal meetups offer members the chance to exchange ideas and foster a more relaxed environment for discussion.

The club also hosts regular dinners at Magpies Waitara, offering a great opportunity for members to socialise and bond over their shared passion for amateur radio.

A Thriving Community and Training Hub

At its core, HADARC is committed to fostering the growth of amateur radio through educational programs and training. The club offers both Foundation and Upgrade courses to help members expand their knowledge and skill sets. The training course coordinator, Matt Eyres (VK2BAI), ensures that these courses meet the needs of all participants.

For more information about upcoming courses or to register, interested individuals can reach out to Matt Eyres directly via the contact details listed on the club's website.

A Leadership Team with a Vision

HADARC is led by a dedicated committee focused on providing a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere for all members:

  • President: Chris Williams (VK2YMW)

  • Secretary: Steve Wright (VK2KHA)

  • Treasurer: Andrew McNamara (VK2TAN)
