In the heart of Central Texas, the Hays/Caldwell Amateur Radio Club (HCARC) stands as a vital connection point for amateur radio enthusiasts from Hays and Caldwell counties. With a membership spanning from the communities of Kyle, Buda, Dripping Springs, San Marcos, and beyond, HCARC is not just a hobbyist's haven but also an integral part of local emergency communication efforts.
A Mission of Service and Education
The Hays/Caldwell Amateur Radio Club is more than just a group of individuals sharing a passion for amateur radio. It's a community-driven organization focused on providing emergency communication services, promoting digital modes, and engaging in contesting and VHF/UHF communication. The club is proud to serve its members and the wider community through both technical learning and hands-on applications.
Meeting Times and Location
The club holds its meetings on the third Saturday of each month at 10:00 AM, although the meeting place varies. To keep everyone updated, meeting details are sent out via the club's Google group and announced on-air through the club’s repeater network.
HCARC members regularly meet on-the-air every Tuesday night at 7:30 PM on the 147.050 MHz repeater (with a 114.8 tone and + offset). These net sessions allow members to connect with each other, discuss club activities, and share tips and advice about the amateur radio hobby.
Community and Emergency Services
Active in ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service), HCARC plays a significant role in providing emergency communication during local disasters or public service events. The club has helped set up ham radios in various Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) across the region, ensuring reliable communication during critical situations.
Whether it’s supporting local events like parades or participating in Field Day exercises, HCARC is committed to making a difference by providing crucial communication links when they’re needed the most.
Services Offered
HCARC is not just about emergency services; it also offers a range of activities and resources for members, such as:
- Mentoring for new and prospective ham radio operators
- Access to the club’s repeater system for communication and training
- Opportunities for community involvement and service-oriented activities
