The Gopher Amateur Radio Club (W0YC) has a long association with amateur radio at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, combining collegiate radio, technical experimentation and the development of new amateur radio operators.
Its history reaches back well over six decades. In fact, W0YC was already playing a role in American collegiate amateur radio before its formal ARRL affiliation. In the spring of 1962, radio amateurs at W0YC helped establish the Association of Collegiate Amateur Radio Clubs (ACARC), with the University of Minnesota station serving as the new organization's headquarters station.
The Gopher Amateur Radio Club later became an ARRL-affiliated club on January 18, 1964.
Today, W0YC remains associated with amateur radio activity at the University of Minnesota and with radio infrastructure serving the wider Minneapolis–St. Paul area.
A New Generation of Gopher Radio Operators
One of the most significant developments in recent years has been renewed student involvement in the club.
The University of Minnesota's current GopherLink directory continues to list the Gopher Amateur Radio Club, describing its mission as providing a community for people interested in amateur radio, giving members access to resources needed to operate radios, promoting the art and science of amateur radio, and helping develop the next generation of operators.
The current university listing names Duncan Joly and Frederick Valentine as club contacts.
Recent student leadership has also worked to rebuild participation on campus. Duncan Joly, who served as club president from February 2025 through June 2026, reported that the club recruited more than 30 undergraduate participants during his term and helped organize an amateur radio examination session that resulted in nine new licensees.
This recent student involvement represents an important change from the older ARRL club record, which was last formally updated in January 2022.
As of the current University of Minnesota listing, the group's registration for the new academic cycle is shown as “Group Not Registered Yet,” so prospective members should check the university directory or contact the group's current officers for the latest campus-registration status.

The way the club meets also appears to have evolved.
Older ARRL records list Shepherd Laboratories on the University of Minnesota East Bank campus as the club's meeting location. However, current on-air information from the club's W0YC APRS system provides a much more recent meeting notice:
