Calling all ham radio enthusiasts in Grand Rapids, Michigan! The Grand Rapids Amateur Radio Association (W8DC) is a thriving ARRL-affiliated club that offers a variety of activities and resources for anyone interested in exploring the fascinating world of amateur radio.
Why Choose Grand Rapids ARA?
- Something for Everyone: W8DC caters to a wide range of ham radio interests, including contesting, digital modes, DXing (long-distance communication), VHF/UHF communication, and more. Whether you're a seasoned operator or just getting started, you'll find a community that shares your passion.
- Supportive Community: Connect with a network of experienced and beginner ham radio operators. Find mentors who can guide you on your licensing journey, share knowledge with fellow members through the club newsletter, and participate in on-the-air bulletins.
- Commitment to Public Service: The club actively gives back to the community through Red Cross support, smoke alarm installation projects, and Adopt-A-Highway roadside cleanups.
- Technical Resources: W8DC maintains a repeater system for communication within the area. They also offer entry-level and higher-level license classes to help you get your ham radio license and mentorship programs to support your growth. For those already licensed, they have an open radio room on Wednesdays and Sundays for you to practice your skills.
- Fun and Events: Test your skills and knowledge with Volunteer Examiner (VE) testing sessions held on the second Friday of each month. Enjoy the camaraderie of fellow ham radio enthusiasts at the annual Grand Rapids ARA Hamfest held in September.
Meeting Information:
Meetings are held on the first Friday of each month at 7:00 PM at the Life-EMS Building located at 1050 Fuller NE, Grand Rapids, MI (one block south of Leonard St).
