May 23, 2025 — Exciting news for the DXing community: Parks Canada has officially invited the CY0S team to return to the remote and challenging terrain of Sable Island for a new DXpedition scheduled for March 2026. Final operating dates are still being finalized, but the team has been cleared for a 10–12-day stay on the island.
Familiar Team, Renewed Challenge
The 2026 expedition will be led once again by Murray WA4DAN and Glenn W0GJ, both of whom helmed the successful 2023 CY0S DXpedition. Several team members from the recent CY9C expedition to St. Paul Island will also be joining. Roles have already been assigned:
-
Larry W0PR will handle publicity and fundraising.
-
Bill K5DHY returns as QSL manager and treasurer.
-
Chaz W4GKF will manage the official website, now live at CY0S.com.
A Harsh Yet Iconic Location
Sable Island, 300 km east of Halifax, Nova Scotia, remains one of the most isolated and difficult DXpedition destinations in North America. It is a 40-km long, 1-km wide sandbar, devoid of trees and battered by relentless wind and snow in March. With no runway, flights are dependent on Sable Aviation’s Britten-Norman Islander, which must land directly on a south-facing beach—weather permitting.
The 2023 expedition faced similar challenges and still managed to achieve:
-
84,517 QSOs
-
155 DXCCs worked
-
DXCC confirmed on six bands (30–10m)
Despite high winds, freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and a severe geomagnetic storm mid-expedition, the team operated four HF stations, 6m, Satellite, and 2m EME with great success.
QSLs and Reflections
Over 7,000 QSL requests were received for the 2023 event, with a beautiful six-panel card featuring Sable’s iconic wild horses. Bill K5DHY and WA4DAN processed cards daily through June 2023.
The team reflected on how difficult it was to execute the expedition due to years of planning, delays from COVID-19, and tight gear restrictions—each operator was limited to 45 lbs total including food and winter gear.
Yet the overwhelming success of CY0S 2023 made it all worthwhile. The 2026 return aims to be even better, with renewed energy and lessons learned from the prior mission.
Stay tuned for the official team announcement and finalized dates. Until then, you can revisit the 2023 journey and follow preparations at CY0S.com.
