TORRENT, VALENCIA — In a world increasingly dominated by fiber optics and 5G, the Union of Radio Amateurs of Torrent (URE Torrent) proves that high-frequency radiowaves still hold their charm — and purpose. As this Valencian delegation marks its 50th anniversary, it does more than look back. Under the energetic leadership of Juan Ramón Bea Cebrián (EA5PC), Torrent is embracing the future of amateur radio while honouring its analog soul.
From CW to FT8 — and Everything in Between
The EB5URT clubstation has become a nerve center of experimentation and outreach. Its weekly "Cacharreo" sessions, led by EC5WO, offer a unique blend of solder smoke and signal science. Every Wednesday afternoon, members tinker with antennas, repair transceivers, and dream up the next generation of radio gadgets. But this is no mere nostalgia workshop. Their ultimate ambition? To bring the hands-on magic of radio into local schools — planting seeds for the next wave of operators.
The Golden Jubilee — Not Just a Party
The 50th anniversary diploma activity (AM50URT) was not your average commemorative event. Over 10 days, Torrent’s airwaves carried more than 20,000 QSOs across 136 countries. That level of engagement — from rookies to seasoned contesters — is no small feat. International top honors went to OM3CND, while EA5JSF claimed the national crown. And within the walls of the local station, operators like EC5K, EA5PI, and EA5IGV were celebrated as top activators in voice, CW, and digital modes.
The award ceremony, including heartfelt speeches, silver pins for long-time members, and a cake-cutting by former presidents, was less of a formality and more of a family reunion.
Diplomacy Through DX
Torrent’s voice reaches well beyond its regional borders. From special event stations like EH5FGY to collaborations such as the "1st Lighthouse Diploma of the Valencian Community", the delegation plays a vital role in Spain’s national and international amateur radio footprint. It is this balance of local engagement and global visibility that makes EB5URT a model for modern radio clubs.
Community, in Signal and Spirit
When floods from a DANA storm devastated Torrent in late 2024, URT responded not just with condolences but with community coordination — underscoring that amateur radio is as much about resilience as it is about reception. The president’s open letters and support for local institutions reflect a civic-minded ethos rarely found in hobbyist circles.
Looking Ahead: 55 Years and Beyond
If the 50th anniversary was a milestone, the next chapter is already underway. The leadership team — rejuvenated and digitally savvy — is investing in both analog continuity and digital fluency. And with plans to integrate educational programs, expand contest activity, and develop public service initiatives, EB5URT is charting a path that mixes Morse code with modernity.
In Torrent, the past is not a relic. It’s a relay — and the transmission is far from over.
