Bellbrook Amateur Radio Club: Bridging Communities and Radio Waves

Nestled in the heart of Bellbrook, Ohio, the Bellbrook Amateur Radio Club (BARC) has been a cornerstone of amateur radio activity and community service since its inception. Originally founded in 1974 as a communications group for the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Township Disaster Plan, BARC officially became a club on July 4, 1976, with 20 charter members. Today, it continues to thrive as a vibrant and welcoming group of amateur radio enthusiasts, boasting 151 members who are passionate about every facet of the hobby.

The club’s headquarters, the BARC Clubhouse & Communications Center, is housed in a former elementary school at 51 S East Street in Bellbrook. Since its establishment in 2007, the clubhouse has become the hub of BARC’s activities. The Communications Center is fully equipped with four stations that cover voice, CW, and digital modes across all bands from 80 meters through 70 cm. While the center is used for general purposes, the club places a strong emphasis on emergency communications, making it an integral part of Greene County’s ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service).

BARC is not just about radios—it's about building a community. The club hosts a variety of social and educational events. Monthly meetings, held on the third Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM, begin with a hospitality hour at 7:00 PM for members to mingle over refreshments. The meetings often feature educational programs on various aspects of amateur radio, ensuring that members continue to learn and grow. Visitors are always welcome to join in the fun and fellowship.

Perhaps the most notable event in BARC's calendar is the annual Field Day, a tradition it has maintained since 1976. In addition to Field Day, the club organizes a Family Picnic, Dinner Meeting, Chili Supper, and weekly "Lunch Bunch" gatherings. With its motto of "FUN, FOOD & FELLOWSHIP," BARC truly embodies the spirit of camaraderie.

For those looking to expand their knowledge, BARC offers a range of educational opportunities. The club organizes entry-level and general or higher license classes, as well as study groups on topics such as antennas, digital communications, Morse code, and CW operating skills. These educational initiatives are often conducted in collaboration with other local clubs and Greene County ARES.

Whether you’re a seasoned ham or new to the hobby, the Bellbrook Amateur Radio Club is a place where anyone can learn, grow, and become part of a supportive community dedicated to both fun and service. If you're in the area, join them at their clubhouse for a meeting or social event—you’ll be met with open arms and plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow radio operators.
