The Italian Radio Amateurs Association (A.R.I.): A National Overview

The Associazione Radioamatori Italiani (A.R.I.), previously known as Associazione Radiotecnica Italiana from 1927 to 1977, was founded in 1927 by Ernesto Montù, one of Italy's pioneering radio amateurs. Guglielmo Marconi served as the Honorary President of the A.R.I. from its foundation until his passing in 1937. In 1950, the A.R.I. was formally recognized as a "Moral Entity" by a Decree from the then-President of the Republic, Luigi Einaudi.

The A.R.I. is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of nine members. Eight of these members are elected every three years from among all adult members, while one member is appointed by the Ministry of Communications.

The life of ARI is regulated by its Statute, which defines its activities and purposes in the interest of its members and all Italian radio amateurs. Key activities include:

  • Publication of RadioRivista: A monthly official organ that features organizational and operational information relevant to radio amateurs, as well as technical articles written by radio amateurs themselves. These articles range from practical and descriptive to more advanced cultural topics. Contributors are mostly radio amateurs from diverse professions, and sometimes professional technicians and researchers who acknowledge their debt to amateur radio.
  • QSL Card Dispatch Service: The A.R.I. handles the dispatch of QSLs (the postcards that confirm radio contacts) directly or through its Sections, for all members to and from almost all countries worldwide.
  • Assistance and Advocacy: The association provides numerous assistance services, protects its members' interests with public bodies and authorities, and represents them at international conferences, either directly or through the I.A.R.U. (the international organization comprising amateur radio associations from around the world, one per country). This includes defending amateur radio frequency bands from the constant threat of encroachment by other radio services.

It is in the interest of both aspiring and current radio amateurs to join the A.R.I., both to benefit from the immediate advantages and because the numerical strength of the A.R.I. is the sole guarantee for the preservation and progress of Italian amateur radio.

How to Join the A.R.I.

Membership in the A.R.I. is typically facilitated through its local Sections, and aspiring members are encouraged to contact their nearest section for information regarding amateur radio activities. The General Secretariat of A.R.I. (segreteria@ari.it, Via D. Scarlatti 31, 20124 Milano, tel. 02-6692192) is also available to prospective members for any information on the subject and can help facilitate contact with sections where direct communication might be challenging.
