Amateur Radio in Wedel: A Warm Welcome at DARC-Ortsverband E10

In the charming town of Wedel, located along the banks of the Elbe River, a group of amateur radio enthusiasts is keeping the spirit of wireless communication alive. The DARC-Ortsverband Welcome Point E10, part of the German Amateur Radio Club (DARC), is a vibrant community of 39 members who share a passion for radio, technology, and camaraderie. With a rich history dating back to 1966, the E10 club is a hub for innovation, education, and connection in the world of amateur radio.

A Legacy of Connection

Founded on September 30, 1966, the E10 club is one of the oldest local chapters in the DARC’s Hamburg district (Distrikt E). The club takes its name from the iconic Willkomm Höft (Welcome Point), a ship greeting station that has welcomed sailors from around the world to Wedel for decades. This maritime heritage is reflected in the club’s activities, which often include coastal and maritime communication projects.

The club’s 39 members come from all walks of life, representing a wide range of professions and age groups. Together, they form a close-knit community that values both technical expertise and the social aspects of amateur radio.

Monthly Gatherings: A Tradition of Togetherness

The E10 club’s monthly OV-Abend (local chapter evening) is a cornerstone of its community. Held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM local time, these gatherings take place at the Ernst-Barlach-Gemeinschaftsschule in Wedel. The meetings are a chance for members to discuss projects, share ideas, and enjoy good company. Visitors and guests are always welcome, making the E10 club an excellent entry point for anyone curious about amateur radio.

In addition to the monthly meetings, the club hosts a weekly OV-Funkrunde (radio roundtable) every Wednesday at 9:00 PM local time on the 2m OV frequency 145.350 MHz. This informal gathering is a great opportunity for members to check in, share news, and stay connected.

A Focus on Innovation and Community

The E10 club is known for its commitment to innovation and community. Members regularly participate in contests and field days, showcasing their skills and competing with operators from around the world. One of the club’s standout initiatives is the Funkbrücke Wedel-Wolgast, a long-standing partnership with the Ortsverband Wolgast (V30) on the island of Usedom. Every Thursday at 6:00 PM local time, members of both clubs meet on 3.657 MHz to exchange news and maintain their connection.

The club’s DK0PR club station is a hub of activity, featuring a variety of equipment and antennas, including the recently reinstalled FB-33 beam antenna. The station is used for contests, training, and experimentation, providing members with a space to hone their skills and explore new technologies.

Field Day and Social Events

The E10 club is also deeply involved in organizing field days and social events. In June 2024, the club partnered with the Ortsverband Pinneberg (E15) to host a joint field day at the Tonnenhafen Wedel, a picturesque location by the Elbe River. The event attracted participants from across the region and included activities such as antenna building, contesting, and socializing.

The club’s annual Grünkohlessen (kale dinner), held in January, is another highlight of the social calendar. This traditional meal brings together members, their families, and friends for an evening of good food and good company.

Looking to the Future

As the E10 club looks ahead, it remains committed to its core values of innovation, education, and community. With a dedicated leadership team, including Chairman Michael Seiler, DG2HAM, the club is well-positioned to continue its legacy of excellence in amateur radio.

For those in Wedel and the surrounding area, the DARC-Ortsverband Welcome Point E10 offers a unique opportunity to explore the world of amateur radio. Whether you’re a seasoned operator or a curious newcomer, the club welcomes you to join its journey through the airwaves.
