In the historic city of Lancaster, Ohio, a vibrant community of amateur radio enthusiasts is making waves—both literally and figuratively. The All Things Amateur Radio Association (ATARA), bearing the call sign W8ATR, has quickly become a cornerstone for those passionate about the art and science of radio communication.
A Beacon for Enthusiasts and Learners
Founded on November 5, 2021, ATARA is an ARRL Special Service Club dedicated to promoting amateur radio through education, public service, and community engagement. With a membership roster boasting 66 individuals, including 54 licensed amateur radio operators, the club offers a welcoming environment for both novices and seasoned hams.
Monthly Meetings and Community Engagement
Every fourth Tuesday of the month, members gather at the Grace Community Church, located at 904 E. Main St., Lancaster, OH 43130. These meetings serve as a hub for knowledge exchange, featuring presentations on the latest in radio technology, discussions on emergency preparedness, and planning for upcoming events.
Education at the Forefront
ATARA places a strong emphasis on education, offering a variety of classes to help individuals obtain or upgrade their amateur radio licenses. From entry-level courses to general and higher license classes, the club provides resources and mentorship to guide members through the licensing process. Regular license test sessions are also held to facilitate certifications.
Youth Involvement and Public Service
Understanding the importance of nurturing future generations, the association actively collaborates with schools and youth groups. By introducing young minds to amateur radio, ATARA sparks interest in STEM fields and promotes valuable skills like problem-solving and effective communication.
The club is also deeply involved in public service and emergency communications. Operating local repeaters and participating in community drills, members are prepared to assist during emergencies, ensuring reliable communication when it's needed most.
Leadership Driving Vision
The success of ATARA is guided by a dedicated leadership team:
- President: Jarrod K. Combs (KE8MBL)
- Vice President: Keith A. Schwickerath (KE8VYD)
- Secretary: Mary K. Moore (KE8UOS)
- Treasurer: Theodore L. Stephens (N8ASH)
- Editor: James T. Breibach (KE8SWY)
Their combined efforts ensure that the club not only runs smoothly but also continues to grow and adapt to the evolving world of amateur radio.
