Amateur radio activity continues from the remote Pacific outpost of Wake Island, where Allen (KH7AL/KH9) and now Richard (KR4CDI/KH9) are experimenting with new modes and equipment.
📡 May 5th marked a milestone as Richard logged what might be the first FT8 QSO from Wake Island, using an Icom IC-7300 with WSJT-X. Contacts with Japan and Brazil kicked off this digital venture, while Allen managed 9 additional FT8 contacts and is now exploring Fox/Hound mode to handle pile-ups.
⏱️ Upcoming schedule:
-
May 8, 07:00–09:00 UTC – 30m CW or FT8
-
May 11, 19:30–23:00 UTC – 12m SSB
📅 Activity highlights:
-
Over 5,000 QSOs logged by Allen since arriving on the island.
-
CW continues to be a major focus, with 1,400+ CW QSOs in March alone.
-
New antennas under development include a 10m VDA and plans for a 15m version.
-
A DX Commander vertical is under construction, and a Hexbeam is on the way (thanks to community support).
Allen and Richard are embracing the unique challenges of operating from this remote location and are bringing Wake Island to life on the bands. Stay tuned for more updates — and if you hear KH7AL/KH9 or KR4CDI/KH9 on the air, don’t miss your chance to work this rare DXCC entity!
